We didn’t have a specific thought for the first week of our Easter holiday course. Instead we encouraged ‘player ownership’. A common problem in English grassroots football centres on coaches constantly telling players what to do, not allowing the players to make their decisions.
Allowing players to make their own decisions not only improves their understanding of the game but also encourages thinking and problem solving skills.
The majority of the competitions were decided and completed by the players themselves, whilst the players who were able to vote for each other determined the Player of the Week.
Congratulations to Jason, Tom, JJ, Max and Freddie for earning the Player of the Week award. They all showed their abilities on the pitch but also demonstrated fantastic off the pitch qualities. They have role model attitudes and constantly have a smile on their face.
The Top Funster award went to Luke Hooper. Luke is a special player who has exceptional technical ability, but it was his improved attitude that earned him this award. He was helpful to both the coaches and fellow players, whilst often smiling and winning the vote in kindness amongst his friends and teammates on the course.
Overall, the week was one of the most enjoyable. So many players who made the course a pleasure to coach on and made the awards decisions incredibly difficult to make accompanied by the good weather. So well done to everyone!
