Thought for the week: ‘You don’t have to be friends, but you have to be friendly.’
Going anywhere away from your parents to people you often don’t know, can be an intimidating process at first. You’re out of your comfort zone. You’re on your own. Making your own decisions and deciding your own choices. The first thing many will look for is a friend. Someone you can spend time with, be comfortable with and rely on. Often, in trying to find friends you will receive knockbacks. There will always be someone who doesn’t like you and you will always have someone that you don’t like. But it is how you display your dislike that often sets the tone. And regardless of your status with someone, friends or not, you should always try to make a welcoming environment. And the best way to do this: With a smile.
And when choosing our Player of the Week or Top Funster, one of the main points we look at in an individual is there attitude and more specifically; are they kind? Do they smile? Do they welcome people?
More often than not, issues arise in the younger group to do with being friends. And more often than not, someone is left in tears because someone else has displayed their dislike in an unkind way. And that is why when someone resolves an issue by their self, despite only being five years old, they stand out. And this is why Ellis Brooks earned the Top Funster award. He is always smiling, creating a welcoming environment for others. He listens and sets an example for others and on the rare occasion when there is an issue, he will resolve it and later you will find him talking and smiling with that very same person that earlier had been upset. Not to mention his footballing ability. He may smile whenever he is off the pitch but on it and with the ball at his feet, he holds a stern face. Because he wants to learn so concentrates, and wants to play so listens. The model student with three unbeatable characteristics: The ability to listen when needed, concentrate when playing, but most importantly smile when in the presence of others.
Also, earning the Player of the Week awards were Louie Woodroof, Henry Chadwick and Will Telling. Players who lead by example but have also improved significantly in recent years to the extent that they are now a pleasure to coach and more like young adults than young children.
